Sanibel is an island city of 6,382 people (2020) in Lee County, across San Carlos Bay from Cape Coral. More than half the island is wildlife refuge, including the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
What that means for your roof
Sanibel homes face the Gulf directly, with salt air and storm surge risk. Many are raised homes with metal or tile roofs, and island rules shape what can be built; see roof replacement. Elevated homes have tall roofs and long eaves that catch wind, and metal roofs with hidden fasteners are popular here.
Getting crews on the island
Work on Sanibel depends on the causeway. Plan ahead, especially before hurricane season. Island building rules and limited access make planning ahead essential for any roof replacement.
The causeway and Ian
Sanibel and Captiva formed as one island about 6,000 years ago, and the Calusa arrived roughly 2,500 years ago. The causeway replaced the ferry in 1963, the city incorporated in 1974 and residents adopted a land use plan to balance growth with preservation. In September 2022 Hurricane Ian heavily damaged the causeway, cutting the island off while repairs were made. Since then many roofs have been rebuilt; owners of repaired roofs should have them inspected before each season; see hurricane damage.
